Stepping gingerly across the ice; is that a cracking sound I hear?

Well, this is it. The recession has officially hit home. Jeremy is now being forced to take an unpaid week off, potentially the first of several this year. Unpaid = smaller paycheck = screwed us. I am beginning to get fearful. I was speaking to my grandmother a few weeks ago about living through the great depression. She and her husband had to survive on his wages working one day a week. I cannot imagine how they did it. And she said they were lucky that he had any work at all. I don't think things will get that bad here, but I'm suddenly thinking very hard about what we would possibly do if Jer lost his job. With no savings and lots of debt, it looks rather bleak. All we can do is pray that it won't come to that and that we will make it through to better days ahead. I am especially trying hard not to be resentful of those around me who are not feeling the pinch of these times at all. I know that we have a lot to be thankful for, that there are many who are much worse off than us. It's just a wee bit hard to see some people spending and vacationing, etc. etc. as though they have not a care in the world. Ah well, we just have to tighten those belts a bit further, I guess. Hopefully we won't run out of holes.

You're not alone in that boat, babe, I'm rowing right next to you!

Wow, Jess. I'm so sorry. You guys are in our prayers. A lot of my friends are having a really awful time trying to find lawyer jobs, and I had a tough time too after graduation, so I relate. I know what worries you most is the four little ones who depend on you to feed and clothe them. Something has got to turn up. Are you guys actively looking for jobs in other areas?

Jess, if you need anything, please let us know.

Hey, you guys are sweet, thanks. We're ok, really, just having to make some harder choices, you know? And yes, we are looking for other jobs, but this is really pretty much the state of things everywhere, it seems.

Dude, an update is called for here!! It's been like a month since we've heard from you!!

Well, thanks to the amazing generosity of a loving friend, we received an amount almost exactly equal to that which we lost due to the week off. That was some answer to prayer, I can tell you!

Unfortunately, it is not quite over yet. There will be no raises for cost of living this year. On the contrary, now Jer is being forced to lose two day's pay every month. It sucks, but I'm thankful it's not worse. Not yet, anyway. We're being given the distinct sense that more is coming later this year. So, I guess we just trust that God will get us through this and pray that the economy picks up soon.

Okay, now what about medical expenses? I know you have had to bring Jadie and Julia in to the doctor a lot over the past couple of months. Is Jer 100% covered for that, or is that adding to your expenses?

And by the way, a little update as to the girlies' health would be appreciated too. Inquiring minds want to know. :)
